Mechanical Contractors for Cathedrals and Churches
We have worked within some of the most significant church buildings in and around London. Our engineers approach every project with the care, discipline, and sensitivity the environment demands — working around liturgical calendars, active services, and the ongoing life of the building at every stage.
Specialist Mechanical Works in Cathedrals, Churches and Ecclesiastical, Buildings in London and the Home Counties
Cathedrals, churches, and historic places of worship present challenges that go far beyond those of even the most complex listed building. The extreme age of the structures, the requirements of the Diocese and the relevant authorities, the sensitivities around the building’s active use and its congregation, and the sheer scale of many of these properties demand a mechanical contractor who is experienced, methodical, and genuinely respectful of where they are working.
Getting it wrong, in terms of method, timing, or attitude, is not an option. These buildings are irreplaceable, and the communities that depend on them deserve CIPHE contractors who understand that.

Our Services (via the Heritage Section)

Heating System Installation & Replacement
Heating a cathedral or large church efficiently is one of the most demanding mechanical challenges in any building type. We have experience delivering heating solutions that work within the constraints of historic church structures — without damaging the fabric or detracting from the character of the space. We work in close liaison with architects, the Diocese, and any relevant authorities throughout.
Heating System Maintenance & Servicing
The consequences of a heating failure in an active cathedral or church, particularly over winter or during major services, can be severe. We provide planned maintenance programmes for church heating systems, keeping them in reliable working order and providing full written records of all servicing carried out.

Cast Iron Drainage
Many of these buildings still rely on original cast-iron drainage infrastructure. We have the specialist knowledge to maintain, repair, and extend these systems correctly, preserving their integrity while ensuring they continue to function to the standard the building requires.
Plumbing and Water Services
Installation, upgrade, and maintenance of water supply, sanitation, and drainage across these buildings. We plan all works carefully around the liturgical calendar and the day-to-day requirements of the building to ensure disruption is kept to an absolute minimum.

Reactive & Emergency Works
When something goes wrong in a cathedral or church, a burst pipe overnight, a failed heating system before Christmas services, a drainage emergency ahead of a major event, speed and sensitivity matter in equal measure. Our engineers are available 7 days a week, 8am to 10pm, and understand the particular urgency that comes with a building in active use.

Planned Maintenance Contracts
A structured maintenance programme gives cathedral authorities, chapters, and PCCs a documented, reliable approach to keeping their mechanical systems in good order throughout the year. We tailor every contract to the building, provide written records of all works, and ensure the systems critical to the building’s function and the comfort of its congregation are properly maintained.

How We Work in Cathedrals & Churches
Working in an active cathedral or church is unlike any other site. We plan every project around the requirements of the building and the community it serves. That means:
- Coordinating with the Chapter, PCC, or relevant building authority from the outset
- Working around the liturgical calendar, avoiding major services, festivals, and events wherever possible
- Liaising with the Diocesan Advisory Committee and any other relevant bodies where consent is required
- Protecting floors, stonework, woodwork, and all historic fabric throughout the works
- Maintaining access for services and visitors at all times unless absolutely unavoidable
- Leaving the building clean, tidy, and ready for use at the end of every working day
